I would like to offer a welcome to you and thank you for considering to study this programme. We have been delivering the qualification very successfully for over 4 years and hold very high success rates with the course acting as a platform to other qualifications. Students cite the benefits of this course as developing confidence in their teaching/training skills, applying a clear structure to their planning and ultimately delivering teaching or training sessions that provide a stronger impact on their learners. Many remain with the college and study at higher levels, gaining further confidence in their teaching or training ability and often changing jobs and careers as a result. The experienced teachers who teach on this programme have vast amounts of experience that bring the sessions to life and use examples and stories that excite and inspire.

Overview of the Award – what does the course involve?
The Pearson BTEC Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training prepares trainee teachers and trainers to teach in a wide range of contexts. To achieve the qualification, there is a requirement for teaching practice that requires observation and assessment of performance. The qualification can meet the needs of a range of trainee teachers and trainers, including:
- individuals who are not currently teaching and training but who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements of the qualification
- individuals who are currently teaching and training, including those who have just begun teaching and training and who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice requirements, of the qualification
- individuals currently working as assessors who wish to achieve a teaching qualification and who can meet the practice requirements, including the observed and assessed practice, of the qualification.

Aims of the programme:
Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will achieve a fundamental and valuable understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to requirements around legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and most importantly, meeting the needs of learners. Candidates will develop practical skills that will enable them to work in a wide range of teaching and learning contexts.
They will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments to enable them to plan, design and deliver inclusive teaching and learning.
They will also be able to effectively assess learning through the use of a wide range of appropriate resources which support effective learning and achievement for individual learners.

The qualification is delivered at Shrewsbury Colleges Group to offer learners the opportunity to study Higher Education in a local college environment. Learners can share experiences and develop new skills using technology-based practice linked to theory. The course is tailored to meet the needs of learners and the needs of the industry.
On successful completion students should be able to:
Learners who achieve the Pearson BTEC Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training and who are progressing to higher education accredited qualifications at level 5 or above can have their Level 4 credit recognised in line with the higher education institution's arrangements for the recognition of prior learning.
Employability
Students who have completed this course have gone on the study at higher levels, either the Level 5 or Level 7 education programmes offered by the College in conjunction with Staffordshire University. Equally, the qualification is a recognised teaching/training qualification that is recognised by employers for posts suits as trainers, teachers and support staff.

In addition, you will be required to provide evidence of 30 hours of teaching/training practice and have been observed on three separate occasions for an hour each time. The observations and teaching practice will help you to develop a teaching practice portfolio.
Teaching and Assessment
How will I be taught?
There will be a balance of tutor-led and student-led work, negotiated within the group, including lectures, seminar, guest speakers, workshop activities, and self-study.
During this course, you will take a problem-based approach to learning. This includes designing, participating and peer-reviewing assessments to help develop your understanding of key teaching, learning and assessment principles in practice. You will also develop presentation and professional communication strategies, skills of investigation and research and general teaching, learning and assessment strategies that will support you in an educational or training role.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment will be through the form of assignments and three required observations throughout the programme to support the 30 hours required teaching.

Quality improvement: Listening to your viewsWe aim to make your experience both worthwhile and enjoyable and to continually improve the quality of our awards.
