Higher National Certificates (HNCs) / Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) can broaden your construction knowledge.

This short higher-level programme focusses on:

The Principles of Alternative Energy

Buildings use about 40 per cent of global energy, 25 per cent of global water and 40 per cent of global resources in their construction and operation. Governments around the world have recognised the importance of tackling energy consumption in the built environment and have introduced legislation to address these issues. Technologies that harness solar, wind and hydro energy are now established systems for generating power and heat. Along with other innovations, such as heat pumps and biofuel, these sustainable energy systems are often incorporated into the design of new construction projects.

The Principles of Off-site Construction

Construction in the 21st century is (in most cases) still carried out along the same principles as medieval construction. Large amounts of material are delivered to a building site where weather conditions and physical constraints can cause not just delays and defects but often unattractive working conditions. Off-site construction offers a range of potential benefits for increasing the efficiency, accuracy and quality of the end product.

HNC in Construction & the Built Environment
Previous Institution: Shrewsbury Academy

I wanted a complete change in career and had always considered becoming an architect. When I came to an SCG Open Evening, tutors suggested the route of Higher Education in Construction. It is a great hands-on course and I especially enjoyed learning about CAD, as this is a skill I need to become an architect.

Level 1 Brickwork
Previous school: Thomas Adams School

I'm in my second year of brickwork and I've been learning a lot about attention to detail. I've got a part-time job on building sites on Mondays and Fridays where I work on extensions, new builds, renovations - anything you can think of really. At college, we learn the techniques and at work, I get to put them into practice.

Level 1 Painting & Decorating
Previous school: Shrewsbury Academy

Painting & Decorating is a good trade to train in and offers great business opportunities afterwards. The tutors are good and I have learnt so much here – I have especially enjoyed learning how to wallpaper.
