Higher National Certificates (HNCs) / Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) can improve your career prospects
Higher National Certificates (HNCs) / Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are work-related higher education qualifications that are highly valued by employers. HNCs/HTQs focus on 'learning by doing' and give you skills that are specific to your job.
An HNC/HTQ qualification related to the industry you work in will improve your professional status and count towards membership of professional bodies and other employer organisations.
Studying an HNC/HTQ is also perfect if you are progressing from college as you’ll learn the skills needed to move into your chosen career. An HNC/HTQ is a Level 4 qualification and is a 2-year course.
HNCs/HTQs are assessed through assignments, projects, and presentations. If you complete an HNC/HTQ, the grades in each subject unit are shown as pass, merit or distinction.

Level 1 Brickwork
Previous school: Thomas Adams School
I'm in my second year of brickwork and I've been learning a lot about attention to detail. I've got a part-time job on building sites on Mondays and Fridays where I work on extensions, new builds, renovations - anything you can think of really. At college, we learn the techniques and at work, I get to put them into practice.

HNC in Construction & the Built Environment
Previous Institution: Shrewsbury Academy
I wanted a complete change in career and had always considered becoming an architect. When I came to an SCG Open Evening, tutors suggested the route of Higher Education in Construction. It is a great hands-on course and I especially enjoyed learning about CAD, as this is a skill I need to become an architect.

Level 2 Painting & Decorating
Previous school: Telford College
My favourite thing that I’ve studied is decorative skills, which involve doing different techniques like stencilling and marbling. It’s quite intricate work and it was a challenge to learn, but I’m really proud of what I’ve done. You’ve just got to try new techniques out and know that you’re going to learn how to do it successfully when you’ve got a tutor as friendly and helpful as my tutors. My dream is to have my own interior design studio, specialising in working with small spaces and proving that you don’t need a lot of room to have a great home.
