Who is it for?
Improvement Practitioners use a blend of Lean and Six Sigma, project and change management principles and tools to identify and lead the delivery of change across organisational functions and processes. Improvement Practitioners can be found across all sectors and functions including automotive, banking, engineering, food products, IT, property, retail, telecoms etc.
Typically, Practitioners lead smaller projects and/or play a key supporting role in a larger programme – tackling issues that may require swift problem solving, or re-occurring challenges that require in-depth analysis and the implementation of a range of effective and sustainable countermeasures. They are the focal point for all stakeholders and responsible for communication throughout a project. Typical activities include:
- Identifying potential opportunities, diagnosing issues, proposing solutions and implementing changes and controls
- Coaching teams and sharing best practice
- When leading projects they may manage small teams ensuring motivation and momentum, and be responsible for the successful
There are a variety of job titles associated with the occupation, these include, but are not limited to: Business Improvement Practitioner, Continuous Improvement Manager, Process Excellence Manager, Lean Six Sigma Green Belt and Quality Control Senior Analyst.

Entry Requirements
In order to complete this Improvement Practitioner Apprenticeship, you must have obtained both maths and English at a Grade C (4) or above, prior to enrolment onto this course, as well as in paid employment within a relevant setting.

How is the course assessed?
This apprenticeship is taught at either our London Road campus on a day release basis or as a group in the workplace. In addition, you will be expected to produce a portfolio of work-based evidence which is reviewed in the workplace every 12 weeks with the college and your employer. You will be required to sit an End Point Assessment, towards the final stages of your programme, to ensure you have obtained the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to carry out your role effectively.

To be an Improvement Practitioner apprentice you will need an employer who can offer you work and release you for your training. Once you have an employer in place, you can apply online. I like that the course is assignment based, which suits my skills a lot more than doing exams. There are also a lot of practical elements to the course which I really enjoyed, like doing presentations, creating displays and taking part in class debates. I originally took this course as an all-rounder as I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after college, however I have really enjoyed the course and am looking at a career in business more seriously now. I am considering going onto the HND course to further my knowledge. Doing the HND at SCG will mean I know other students and have a rapport with the teachers, will not have far to travel and it will cost me a lot less than at university.
