Shrewsbury Colleges Group has announced the arrangements for Assessment Week for families of Year 1 A Level students only.
Year 1 Assessment Week
We have planned for the first set of formal exam assessments to be held after Easter from Monday 15 April until Friday 19 April.
There will be a second set of mock exams after another two terms of study (December/January of Year 2) followed by the final A Level exams in May/June of Year 2. There will of course be other tests during the course set by different subjects, but these ‘mock’ exam periods will use the exam suite at English Bridge Campus and be conducted in the same way as real exams to get students used to the surroundings and systems. It also helps students to consolidate and revise their work in sensible chunks as they complete their courses.
These first-year exams will form part of the assessment evidence for teachers to use when deciding on predicted grades for university applications, but they are not the only predictor – students should take the exams seriously and prepare thoroughly but please do not panic if they don’t go as well as they hope; there will be plenty of time for the college to work with students in helping them to make improvements if needed.
Please note that there is no study leave for this first period of assessments in Year 1 – students should attend lessons as normal, unless their lesson clashes with an exam, in which case students should attend the exam and then return to lessons when the exam has finished.
Exam Arrangements
- There will be an exam in every A Level subject except for Art/Graphics/Photography/Textiles since these subjects are assessed by final portfolios rather than exams.
- There will be a Criminology mock exam.
- All exams will take place at English Bridge Campus – if students don’t know their way around this campus then please don’t worry – there will be staff on hand who can help to direct students.
- Morning exams start at 9:00 and afternoon exams start at 1:30. They should arrive at least 10 minutes before this time since they will be called into the exam room before the start to be seated.
- Students are responsible for bringing their own equipment (black pens for all exams; pencils/calculators/rulers/headphones for listening exams as appropriate for different subjects).
- They will need to have ID with them so they need to remember their lanyard and ID card.
- Students should only bring minimal luggage on exam days as they won’t be able to take bags into the exam rooms.
- Individual exam timetables for students will be available to download from ProPortal from Tuesday 19 March – students should please print a copy and bring it to each exam with them. Note that the exam rooms all start with a letter W for Wakeman Hall – which is at English Bridge Campus.
- Instructions for downloading their timetable from ProPortal as well as the rules and regulations for exams will be explained in tutorial sessions this week and next; the instructions will also be posted on the Year 1 tutorial Teams page.
- Their timetable will show any approved access arrangements and any rearranged start times in case of exam clashes. If students have any queries about what is written on their timetable, then please contact the exams team at This email address is being protected from spambots. If students have any queries about the content or format of the exams, then please discuss these with their teachers. We hope that students will find these first formal exams to be useful preparation for them and we also hope that they and their families have some time to relax over the Easter break.
