Learning Resource Centres (LRCs)
Here you will find friendly teams working to help you succeed on your chosen course. The LRCs offer print and online resources in your subject area, as recommended by your reading lists, and experienced staff are on-hand to deal with your enquiries. You can use the computers for internet research, access Moodle for your course materials, and Office 365 for Office applications and cloud storage.
The LRCs are Wi-Fi enabled so you can use your own device. All computers have the My Study Bar programme installed, and several licences for ZoomText are available as required. Two student laptops have Dragon software installed, and these can be loaned for an interim period.
If you are returning to study or progressing onto a higher education course, the LRC staff can help you make that transition with advice on study, information-searching skills, and literature, which will help you develop your academic skills in readiness for enrolment on your chosen course.

Student Support Tutor - HE
The Student Support Tutor is available to provide study support sessions and guidance for all HE students. Studying at HE requires more independent learning and academic study skills; therefore, you may need to use different approaches to studying. These sessions are aimed to assist students throughout the year to develop key academic study skills and useful learning strategies. Examples are:
- Academic integrity, referencing and use of AI in assignment work
- Time management & organisation skills
- Effective assignment planning to suit your style of learning
- Efficient ways of researching, reading and referencing for assignment tasks
- Writing critically to meet the brief, the word limit and the deadline
- How to produce assignment work in different formats (essay, report, presentation, poster)
- Mindfulness-based stress reduction for improved focus and better study/life balance
- Critical reflection and writing
- The Learning Resource Centre at London Road can provide more detailed guidance and specific sessions on using library resources, carrying out research tasks, finding suitable sources and accurate referencing
An introduction to academic study skills is part of the HE induction programme. Every student can self-refer or be referred by their tutors for more detailed sessions with the HE Student Support Tutor.
Additional Learning Needs
It is essential for all new HE students who feel they have additional learning needs to let us know as soon as possible and ideally at interview and enrolment. This will guarantee that you are contacted for an initial session where we can discuss and advise you on the support available while you study. This may include support and guidance in applying for Disabled Students' Allowance.
Learning Support
Non-medical mentoring and support for students with neurodivergence are offered by HE Student Support Tutor.
Learning support can also be provided by approved Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA) providers for higher education students studying at Shrewsbury Colleges Group who have an identified disability, mental health condition, medical condition, or a specific learning difficulty and who are in receipt of DSA.
If you have an identified disability, mental health condition, medical condition, or a specific learning difficulty, an application to Student Finance for DSA needs to be completed along with supporting evidence of your disability. More information on this can be found at:
Assistive Technology
Within college, we have some Assistive Technology available through the Additional Learning Support department or the LRC. Examples are:
- ‘My Study Bar’ software
- Reading pens
- Dictaphones
- Augmented reality
- Telephone support
- Email support
- Hearing loop
- Adjustable tables
- Ergonomic mice and keyboards to accommodate difficulties with motor skills
- Laptops
- Tablets
- Bring your own device. (Students are encouraged to use their own assistive technology in lessons.)
If the HE Student Support Tutor is unable to support you, you will be signposted to other services that can.
Please look out for a series of HE events on offer to prepare you for studying in advance of your course starting.
