BSc in Counselling Theory and Practice (Top up)

This course has been specifically developed for counsellors currently qualified at Diploma or Foundation Degree level. The course offers an opportunity for candidates to deepen their understanding of counselling theory and practice whilst developing expertise in areas of specific interest. Candidates further develop their practitioner skills through engaging in reflective tasks, whilst undertaking a research project on their chosen subject in order to enhance their knowledge of effective counselling practice.

This qualification also aims to provide further professional development opportunities within an academic framework. As more people access professional support and advice for mental health issues there continues to be a rise in demand for counselling and professionally qualified counsellors.

Employers recognise the value of the increased level of competency and proficiency, in counselling skills and knowledge, of graduate counsellors.

Foundation Degree in Counselling or an equivalent award which offers practitioner status, consisting of no less than 400 hours of training and a minimum of 100 hours of supervised counselling practice.

GCSE English Language grade C or above (or equivalent).

For students for whom English is not their first language IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent).

Course Content

Compulsory modules:
• Research Methods
• Research Project

One of the following 20 credit modules:
• Counselling Clients Experiencing Trauma or
• Relationship Counselling

One of the following 40 credit modules:
• Counselling Clients Experiencing Grief and Loss or
• Counselling Children and Young People

Students need to successfully achieve 120 credits.

Assessment is based on practical and written assignments, presentations, and an exam.

Students will receive ongoing one-to-one guidance and support. Learning resources are provided and available from home via the college’s Moodle system. Our dedicated Student Support Tutor for Higher Education also provides support with assignment planning, organisation and time management, presentation skills, reading and notetaking.
