100% Exam - consisting of three exams at the end of the course (two hours each).

  • Entry Requirements

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English Language, with Maths at grade 7 or above.

  • What does the course involve?

Mathematics is the science of pattern and structure. Like language, religion, and music it is a universal part of human culture. Mathematics has a pervasive influence on our everyday lives, from analysing statistics in medical research to designing safe structures and vehicles, to encrypting personal data to be transmitted securely across the internet. Maths is at the very core of all new technological developments, which include everything from Games Design to Internet Security. Financial transactions and online purchasing systems are underpinned by mathematics, relying heavily on encryption.

Two-thirds of the course is pure mathematics including topics such as algebra, functions, trigonometry, and calculus. The remaining content is equally split between the applied topics of mechanics and statistics. Mechanics will involve the study of the physical world, modelling the motion of objects and the forces acting on them. Statistics allows you to work with data from a sample to make inferences about a population, do probability calculations and model real-life data using statistical distributions and hypothesis testing.

The Maths department also offers Further Maths and Statistics at A Level - see separate course pages 69 and 82.

Please note that Further Mathematics AS Level is available as an additional course in the second year for those students who wish to make competitive entries to maths degree courses and need to extend their mathematical subject knowledge.

  • Additional Notes

The majority of our students progress to higher education courses studying a range of degrees from maths to engineering, medicine to marine biology, and criminology to law to name a few.

Students have also gained competitive apprenticeships or employment in accounting, computer programming and engineering companies. Maths is at the core of technological developments, which include everything from Games Design to Internet Security.

Financial transactions and online purchasing systems are underpinned by mathematics, relying heavily on encryption. GCHQ has the largest group of mathematicians working anywhere in the country!

New areas of study include Population Modelling, Forensics, DNA sequencing and Modelling Disease & Epidemics.

  • Further Information

Each year students have the opportunity to participate in the Senior Maths Challenge and visits are organised to lectures by leading mathematicians working in academia and industry.

  • What do I do next?

You can apply online via the APPLY button and then add an additional two or three subjects to make up your academic programme. You can also apply for a second, alternative vocational programme of study via a separate application. If after reading this factsheet, you are still undecided about the course most suitable for you, please drop into one of our open evenings, ring our Admissions Department on 01743 653111, or email admissions@scg.ac.uk
