  • How much does it cost?

    The course fee is as advertised on the website plus examination fee, however currently for most students who have not achieved a 4 grade or above it is free. Fees stated are for enrolment for the current academic year only. Courses which run for more than one year may be subject to fee changes.

  • Who is it for?

    GCSE in English has always been well recognised by employers and education institutions and in today's competitive employment market it is more valuable than ever. Gaining this qualification will make your CV more attractive to employers and enable you to progress onto other courses here at Shrewsbury College or other institutions. You could progress onto an AS or A2 English qualification or complete additional GCSEs such as mathematics.

  • Entry Requirements

    No formal qualifications are required but an interest in the subject and regular attendance.

  • What does the course involve?

    The course is split into the following three units: 

    • Paper 1: Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing
    • Paper 2: Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives
    • Non-examination Assessment: Spoken Language


    Assessment for this course is by set assessments throughout the course and two external examinations at the end of it.

  • Additional Notes

    You may need to obtain some books to assist your studies and complete some work in your own time. This course can be studied alongside full-time courses or separately on a part-time basis on a Monday evening or Friday afternoon. These courses are currently free to any EU student who has not already achieved the GCSE at grade 4 or above.
