100% Exam

Three exams at the end of the two year course. Practical Endorsement in Physics. This is a non-exam assessment that involves carrying out 12 different practical investigations and providing evidence for each one in a folder submitted at the end of the course.

  • Entry Requirements

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language, grade 5 or above in Maths and grade 5 or above in GCSE Physics with a further GCSE Science subject at grade 5 or above or at least 5:5 in GCSE Combined Science.

  • What does the course involve?

At SCG you'll discover the exciting breadth of this subject, from the unimaginably small components of matter to the mind-blowing vastness of the universe. Physics helps to reveal the mathematical beauty of the universe.

Every opportunity is taken to consolidate teaching with practical work using well-equipped and modern labs, all supported by our dedicated team of physics teachers and technicians. Classroom lessons are supported by a suite of virtual resources and software to enable students to access learning from home and develop the independent learning styles you'll need for your future studies and employment.

You will already be familiar with many of the topics you will study from your GCSE courses, including forces, waves, radioactivity, electricity and magnetism. At A Level, you'll look at these areas in more depth and find out how they are interconnected. You will also learn how to apply maths to real-world problems and explore new and expanding areas of science, such as particle physics and cosmology.

    Year 1

Your study of mechanics, materials and waves in the first year will lay the foundations for understanding man-made and natural structures. You will also be introduced to the strange world of quantum physics.

    Year 2

In your second year, we explore Magnetic, Electrical and Gravitational Field theories and extend the Mechanics taught in the first year. The final unit is Astrophysics, where you will learn about the energy and forces that shape the Universe.

  • Additional Notes

Physics A Level is beneficial for many careers including those in science, engineering, electronics and the medical field - but Physics is a highly regarded A Level whatever your future choice of career.

Physics graduates are highly valued for their problem-solving and numeracy skills.

Career options include architecture, medicine, veterinary sciences, oceanography, photography, cartography, science broadcasting or journalism, computer-aided design, quantity surveying, graphic art, and technical jobs in media. In the world of finance physics graduates are in even greater demand due to their transferable skills.

Please note that any student wishing to study engineering or physics at university will usually be required to also have A Level Maths.

  • Further Information

You can apply to take part in the Engineering Education Scheme which links teams of students with local companies to work on real, scientific, engineering and technological problems. This six-month scheme provides you with in-depth experience in science, engineering and technology and will help you make an informed decision about your future studies and career.

  • What do I do next?

You can apply online via the APPLY button and then add an additional two or three subjects to make up your academic programme. You can also apply for a second, alternative vocational programme of study via a separate application. If after reading this factsheet, you are still undecided about the course most suitable for you, please drop into one of our open evenings, ring our Admissions Department on 01743 653111, or email admissions@scg.ac.uk

Where can it take me?

Laboratory technicians

Laboratory technicians carry out routine laboratory tests and checks, and perform a variety of technical support functions requiring the application of established or prescribed procedures and techniques to assist scientists with their research, development, analysis and testing, and to verify the physical, chemical and other characteristics of materials and products.

Medical radiographers

Medical (diagnostic) radiographers operate x-ray machines, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and other imaging devices for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, assist in the diagnosis of injuries and diseases and are involved in intervention procedures such as the removal of kidney stones. They operate under the supervision of senior staff. Therapeutic radiographers specialise in the planning and administration of radiotherapy treatment for patients with cancer.
