100% Coursework. Two components: 60% personal investigation, 40% externally set assignment

  • Entry Requirements

A minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and an Art or Design subject. Those who have not studied a GCSE Art or Design subject should be able to demonstrate their interest and ability through an informal interview with the subject tutor, and the presentation of a visual portfolio that may include a variety of media, as well as examples of observational drawing.

  • What does the course involve?

A Level Fine Art is a significant step up from GCSE Art and offers you the opportunity to study this subject in much greater depth and detail. Our experienced and specialist teachers will guide you through various techniques and media to explore your creative potential. Our fully equipped facilities will aid the development of your output in whatever form it takes.

We encourage students to challenge their habitual working methods by experimenting with various image-making techniques, media, and materials.

This exciting course offers you the opportunity to develop your skills across a range of challenging course requirements.

    Year 1:

Skill Building and Portfolio Development. You will experiment with a range of media and explore different areas within Fine Art, including painting, collage, printmaking, and 3D construction, as well as developing a varied approach to drawing. You will be taught good sketchbook practice, involving visual research, developing a thread of visual ideas, and refining these into a sophisticated final outcome.

    Year 2:

Personal Investigation (Component 1) and External Set Assignment (Component 2). You will build on the knowledge and skills gained previously, to develop work that demonstrates a more independent, personal, and ambitious character. You must also produce a personal written investigation of up to 3000 words to support your practical work.

  • Additional Notes

There are many avenues to explore after taking Fine Art A Level including further study through Art Foundation courses or a fine art degree. Career opportunities include such roles as painting, printmaking, contextual practice, community arts, interactive art, art history, animation, digital film and screen arts, public sculpture and installation, architecture, interior design, theatre and stage design, media research, curatorial studies, and teaching.

  • Further Information

You will have the opportunity to attend the 'Create Your Future' UCAS Art and Design Convention in Manchester, to find out about all creative courses in the UK.

  • What do I do next?

You can apply online via the APPLY button and then add an additional two or three subjects to make up your academic programme. You can also apply for a second, alternative vocational programme of study via a separate application.
