Who is it for?

This course is for students who have completed a Level 2 City & Guilds qualification or candidates with suitable working skills and knowledge.
This qualification can help you to progress in a wide range of engineering roles including: Engineering operative; Engineering maintenance technician; Mechanical engineering technician; Sheet metal worker; Welder.
Entry Requirements

Successful completion of Level 2 Diploma in Engineering (or suitable industry experience) and a minimum of four GCSEs at grade 4 or above including Maths.
What does the course involve?
Fabrication and welding form a huge part of mechanical engineering. This fascinating course builds on the Level 2 Diploma to further progress your engineering knowledge and support your career aspirations. Our experienced teachers will guide you through the requirements of the course and help you develop the necessary skills and experience for your next steps.
This course in Fabrication & Welding includes units on:
- Engineering health & safety
- Principles of engineering technology
- Principles of fabrication and welding technology
- Manual Metal Arc welding (MMA)
- Metal Inert Gas welding (MIG)
- Tungsten Inert Gas welding (TIG)
- Manual sheet fabrication and patternmaking.
You will learn through a combination of practical and classroom-based sessions.
Students will be required to attend Maths and English (GCSE or Functional Skills) depending on prior achievements and initial assessments.
How is the course assessed?

Assessment for this course includes online and written exams, practical assessment, and completion of a portfolio of coursework.
How much does it cost?

Students will be expected to provide their own overalls/clothing for workshop and safety shoes.
Additional Notes

Successful completion of the course will enable you to secure a job as a production engineer in the industry or to pursue an engineering apprenticeship. You can gain further qualifications by completing the T Levels in Design & Development for Engineering & Manufacturing or an HNC / HND in Engineering. HNCs in Electrical and Electronic Technology, Manufacturing Technology and Mechanical Engineering are available to study at Shrewsbury Colleges Group.

We’ll supplement the classroom teaching with visits to engineering companies to observe the skills you are learning being put into practice.

I’m a practical person, so I wanted to do something with my hands. I didn’t have any experience before, but the teachers were really good at guiding me through. I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so the fact that the staff let me work to my own pace really helped. I have now secured an Apprenticeship with Caterpillar in Shrewsbury, and I can see myself being there for some time. I’m sure it wouldn’t have happened unless I’d been on this course as at my interview they seemed really impressed with what I was doing.

Level 2 was mostly practical and this year on Level 3 there is a lot of theory and it's preparing me for university. I live outside of Shrewsbury and the transport links to the College are good.

I came here because I'm interested in Engineering. I really enjoyed doing my final project and having the creativity to come up with my own design and I have also enjoyed working with hydraulics. I achieved D*D*D* in my Diploma and am now going on to do an Apprenticeship. The teachers are helpful and the equipment at the College is state-of-the-art.
