There is a combination of internally and externally assessed units, and you will build a personal development portfolio. In addition, you will complete 100 mandatory hours of work placement in a variety of care settings, which will prepare you for the world of work.

  • Entry Requirements

    A minimum of five academic GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths. Other academic subjects could include Science, Geography, History or a Level 2 Health & Social Care course with at least an overall Merit profile and Functional Skills at Level 2. 

    All applicants require a clear enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS).

    The College is a registered body under the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and will enable students to apply for a Disclosure check. If you are applying for a place you need to be willing to discuss previous convictions, reprimands, cautions or final warnings prior to enrolling on the course. This will allow us to provide you with appropriate information, advice and guidance on an individual basis.

  • What does the course involve?

    This course will equip you with the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to be ready to take up employment in health & social care or to progress onto higher education. This rewarding career offers a huge variety of roles and leads very well to further study at a higher level. Our expert teachers will support you through this two-year course which comprehensively prepares you for a career in social and healthcare.

    You will study 13 units covering topics such as:

    • Working in Health & Social Care
    • Human Lifespan Development
    • Psychology
    • Sociology
    • Promoting Public Health
    • Anatomy & Physiology
    • Work Experience.

    You will be expected to study GCSE Maths if you do not already have grade 4 or above.

    Many SCG students have gone onto Higher Education courses at University or here at Shrewsbury Colleges Group. Careers in health & social care offer long-term employment prospects with opportunities for promotion and progression. Our courses prepare you for a range of careers including Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedic Science and Social Work and many more.

    On successful completion, previous SCG Health & Social Care students have continued to study here at SCG or at university to become Nurses, Midwives or Paramedics, or work in other health care professions such as Occupational Therapy. Other SCG students have also studied Social Work or Primary Education or other academic courses like Psychology and Sociology.

    We have also seen some SCG students choose to become carers or health care assistants or to work in residential care, at nurseries or in hospitals and commence NVQs and Apprenticeships. We also offer SCG students the opportunity to train to be a nurse via the nursing associate route within an NHS hospital.
