The course is assessed via an online exam and several practical tasks for each unit, each of these tasks is also underpinned with written worksheets and assessments.

  • How much does it cost?

    Students will be expected to provide their own overalls, safety shoes and contribute to the cost of any additional enrichment activities.

    If you are aged 19 or over, fees for tuition, exams and materials may be payable on enrolment.

  • Who is it for?

    This course gives students a brilliant introduction to the world of transport maintenance. Our experienced teachers will take you through a range of topics on Transport Maintenance to give you the knowledge, skills, and experience to develop a career in this fantastic industry. You'll be based in our purpose-built automotive centre at the London Road Campus, gaining great, hands-on experience in working with many types of transport vehicles. There is a clear progression route from this subject either into a Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Service and Repair or onto an apprenticeship in the industry.

  • Entry Requirements

    A minimum of four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, which must include Maths and English.

  • What does the course involve?

    You will study many different aspects of transport maintenance on this course.

    Specific units studied include:

    • Locating, interpreting, and using technical information
    • Vehicle materials and joining methods
    • The retail motor industry
    • Compression ignition (diesel) engine system components and operation
    • Lubrication system components and operation
    • Vehicle driveline maintenance
    • Routine vehicle maintenance processes and procedures
    • Spark ignition (petrol) engine system components and operation
    • Light vehicle exhaust system components and maintenance
    • Health & Safety in the workplace
    • Lighting system maintenance
    • Vehicle exterior valeting and detailing
    • Electric (hybrid) vehicle awareness
    • Light vehicle cooling systems.

    Students will be required to attend Maths and English (GCSE or Functional Skills) depending on prior achievements and initial assessments.  

  • Additional Notes

    Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the option to progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Engineering or the Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Service and Repair. An alternative option would be to do an apprenticeship in motor vehicle.

    You will have the opportunity to study in our industry-standard workshops and be guided by our experienced teachers.

    We work with many employers in the area including Rybrook BMW, Furrows, Specialist Cars, Draper Tools, and RMT Garage Equipment to ensure you have the best opportunities to advance in your career.

    You will visit vehicle manufacturers and garages to observe the skills you are learning and put these into practice during your work experience.
