This is a controlled assessment. You will be monitored as you undertake a series of practical assessments, culminating in an invigilated online test.

You need to successfully pass this assessment if you want to become an MOT Tester. You will be awarded a level 3 vehicle inspection qualification.

  • Who is it for?

This controlled assessment is intended for technicians whose job role involves the inspection, maintenance and repair of light vehicles. IMI Accreditation is a practical, non-academic way to demonstrate individual capability, providing independent proof of current competence, knowledge and skills.

The IMI Light Vehicle Inspection route (formerly known as ATA Accreditation) is designed for technicians whose job role involves the inspection, maintenance and repair of light vehicles. If you don't hold a relevant level 3 qualification that is recognised by the DVSA for you to become an MOT tester for class 3, 4, 5 or 7 vehicles; then this accreditation is an alternative.

This is for skilled and experienced technicians who are of a standard to complete the assessment only with no training.

  • Entry Requirements

You must be able to work unsupervised - ideally, you should be in full-time employment with at least three years of experience to ensure familiarity with the techniques for vehicle servicing, inspection and system(s) diagnosis. This is an ideal route to gain a formal qualification to become an MOT tester.

  • What does the course involve?

This course involves two days of both theoretical and practical training and a final day of assessment.

You will focus on all vehicle systems from steering, suspension, wheels and tyres, body, corrosion, vehicle and braking systems.

You will be monitored carrying out assessment on vehicles in our workshop, on the following vehicle systems:

    • Emission System
    • Electrical Systems Inspection
    • Braking Systems Inspection
    • Steering and Suspension System Inspection
    • Vehicle Structure Inspection
    • Vehicle Appraisal Inspection
  • Additional Notes

This accreditation will certify your ability to use emission-testing equipment for both petrol and diesel vehicles, as well as to accurately analyse the results of these emission tests. Achievement ensures that candidates meet the requirements to take the MOT tester course.

Once an individual has passed all the required practical and knowledge-based modules in a specific route, they will receive formal accreditation and a certificate of achievement which is valid for three years.

You could then progress to go and complete the MOT inspection course and become an MOT tester.
