  • How much does it cost?

Students will be expected to provide their own overalls, safety shoes and contribute to the cost of any additional enrichment activities.

  • Who is it for?

This programme is designed to provide a foundation in vehicle technology for learners currently working within the motor vehicle industry or provide progression for learners who already hold a valid Level 1 Certificate (or equivalent). Progression from the programme would be onto an apprenticeship or an engineering course.

  • Entry Requirements

Successful completion of Level 1 Diploma in Transport Maintenance, or suitable experience.

  • What does the course involve?

The Level 2 course builds upon the knowledge gained on either the Level 1 course or through relevant work experience. This course provides a broad range of light vehicle service and repair topics to give you the necessary knowledge and skills to develop a career in this fascinating industry. Our experienced and knowledgeable teachers will guide you through this one-year course based in our purpose-built automotive centre at the London Road Campus.

There is a focus on basic vehicle diagnostics, vehicle inspection techniques, light vehicle servicing and complex mechanical repairs. You will practise in our purpose-built automotive centre. In addition, there are practical and classroom-based sessions.

The units on this course include:

    • Supporting job roles
    • Routine light vehicle maintenance and inspection
    • Light vehicle fuel, ignition, and exhaust
    • Light vehicle electrical units and components
    • Light vehicle suspension, steering and brake
    • Vehicle transmission.

Students will be required to attend Maths and English (GCSE or Functional Skills) depending on prior achievements and initial assessments.

  • Additional Notes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the option to progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Engineering or the Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Service and Repair. An alternative option would be to do an apprenticeship in Motor Vehicle. Both these progression routes are available through Shrewsbury Colleges Group. Alternatively, you could progress into work as an automotive fast-fit technician.

  • Further Information

You will have the opportunity to study in our industry-standard workshops and be guided by our experienced teachers.

We work with many employers in the area including Rybrook BMW, Furrows, Specialist Cars, Draper Tools, and RMT Garage Equipment to ensure you have the best opportunities to advance in your career.

You will visit vehicle manufacturers and garages to observe the skills you are learning and put these into practice during your work experience.

  • What do I do next?
