Each unit within the course is assessed via an online exam and several practical tasks. Each of these tasks are also underpinned with written worksheets and assessments.

  • How much does it cost?

    Students will be expected to provide their own overalls, safety shoes and contribute to the cost of any additional enrichment activities.

  • Who is it for?

    This programme is designed for learners who already possess a Level 2 Motor Vehicle qualification. 

  • Entry Requirements

    Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Service and Repair.

  • What does the course involve?

    You will be trained to a fully qualified level by our experienced teachers which, with the required industry experience, will allow you to progress onto the MOT Tester qualification.

    This course will also provide you with an appreciation of the operation of a commercial garage and develop skills in customer service. You will have a mixture of classroom and workshop-based learning to successfully complete the course. Progression into full-time employment is the most common outcome.

    The course covers several units to equip you for a career in light vehicle service and repair.

    Units include:

    • Diagnosing and rectifying
    • Vehicle auxiliary electrical faults (including Hybrid vehicles)
    • Light vehicle engine faults
    • Light vehicle transmission faults
    • Light vehicle chassis system faults
    • Hybrid Vehicle Systems
    • Customer care

     

    Students will be required to attend Maths and English (GCSE or Functional Skills) depending on prior achievements and initial assessments.  

  • Additional Notes

    Upon successful completion of this course, you will have several progression opportunities including:

    • Part-time IMI Level 4 Master Technician qualification
    • Level 3 Hybrid Vehicles qualification
    • MOT Tester qualification (subject to meeting industry experience criteria)
    • Apprenticeship in motor vehicle
    • Employment as an automotive technician

    All these progression routes are available through Shrewsbury Colleges Group.

  • Further Information

    You will have the opportunity to study in our purpose-built automotive centre and be guided by our experienced teachers.

    An industry-based work placement is essential with this course and we'll help you find a suitable one to aid your development and work experience.

    You will visit vehicle manufacturers and garages to observe the skills you are learning and put these into practice during your work experience.
