  • What does the course involve?

Bricklaying is a valuable and highly skilled craft and one of the cornerstones of the construction industry. The basic skills that you develop on this course will help you to work on projects ranging from building garden walls to house extensions, house building and commercial projects such as factories. To become a bricklayer, you will need to be organised and motivated, physically active, a good team player, able to read and understand plans and drawings, and be an effective communicator.

This course is set within an external workshop to simulate a real working environment. You must be prepared to work outside and in all weathers.

You will gain skills to prepare you for work as a bricklayer including:

    Principles of Construction

    Health & Safety

    Setting out of Masonry Structures

    Blockwork

    Brickwork

    Cavity Walling

Students will be required to attend Maths and English (GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2) depending on prior achievements and initial assessments.

  • Additional Notes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the option to progress to the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Brickwork or an apprenticeship in brickwork. Both these progression routes are available through Shrewsbury Colleges Group.

  • Further Information

Students have the opportunity of entering local, national, and international competitions including the UK SkillBuild competition.
