Each unit will be assessed by end of unit multiple-choice tests supported with practical assessments throughout the year, together with two online multiple-choice knowledge tests.

  • How much does it cost?

    You will provide your own overalls, safety shoes, tools, classroom equipment and contribute to the cost of any additional enrichment activities.

    If you are aged 19 or over, fees for tuition, exams and materials may be payable on enrolment.

  • Who is it for?

    This programme is designed to give you a broad knowledge and understanding of the Construction Industry and will provide the technical skills training to achieve a Level 1 Diploma in Painting and Decorating. 

  • Entry Requirements

    GCSE Maths and English at grade 3 or above.

  • What does the course involve?

    This course will give you an excellent start in the requirements for a career in painting and decorating.

    You will benefit from expert guidance from our highly skilled and knowledgable teachers who have a wealth of industry experience, so you'll be learning from people who have actually done the job for which you are training.

    The elements of the course include:

    • Erecting and dismantling access equipment and working platforms
    • Preparing surfaces
    • Applying paint systems by brush and roller
    • Applying foundation and plain papers
    • Producing specialist decorative finishes
    • Principles of construction, information & communication
    • Health, safety & welfare in construction.

     

    Students will be required to attend Maths and English (GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2) depending on prior achievements and initial assessments.  

  • Additional Notes

    Upon successful completion of this course, you will have the option to progress to the Level 2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating or an apprenticeship in Painting and Decorating. Both these progression routes are available through Shrewsbury Colleges Group. 

  • Further Information

    Students can enter local, national, and international competitions including the UK SkillBuild competition. Students at SCG have also taken part in the annual Graining and Marbling Olympics in Stoke, where they have previously gained 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
