More information

Knowledge criteria will be assessed as assignments which may take the format of presentations, leaflets, posters, displays, games, essays and use of case studies.

Skills criteria will be observed in placement by an Assessor as well as through professional discussions and writing reflective accounts.

Please note there are no examinations.

  • Who is it for?

The one-year course is for those wanting to pursue a career in roles that support pupils' learning in primary, secondary or special schools as well as colleges, for instance as a Teaching Assistant. On completion of this course you can gain employment as a level two Teaching Assistant.

Shrewsbury Colleges Group also offers opportunities to undertake English and Maths qualifications part time which will enable your progression onto the level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching and Learning and then onto a full degree in Education.

  • Entry Requirements

You must like children and young people and have a passion for empowering pupils to meet their full potential.

You will be required to source a school or college placement for one day week and acquire a DBS certificate from your placement.

You will be invited to a professional discussion with one of the course teachers to discuss your suitability, eligibility and reason for wanting to undertake the course as well as have an opportunity for you to find out more information.

  • What does the course involve?

The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments.

The course will guide you through a series of eleven knowledge units including child development, supporting positive behaviour, teamwork in a learning environment as well as how to promote an effective learning environment.

Learners will spend one day a week in placement for the duration of the course. This experience will enable you to show competence in the skills criteria.

The knowledge criteria will help to underpin and inform your practice and together with the skills criteria enhance your employability.

  • Additional Notes

Experience of working or volunteering with children in some capacity and possessing GCSEs or equivalent is an advantage.

Use of a computer will be helpful for assignment work.
