A Shrewsbury Colleges Group (SCG) student has discovered his passion for football coaching with the help of Shrewsbury Town in the Community (STITC).
Geoff Freeman, 17, studying the College Ready programme at SCG, was assigned a coach to work with while at school at Shrewsbury Academy.
The College Ready programme at SCG helps students gain the skills required to progress on to further studies within college.
Now, after completing his Level 1 Coaching course, Geoff is a volunteer at STITC and teaching children new football skills.
Shrewsbury Town in The Community is the official charity of Shrewsbury Town Football Club and delivers over 35 projects for the community every week across Shropshire.
“Having a coach from Shrewsbury Town Football Club helped in school as it gave me targets to aim for. I’d go to watch Shrewsbury play at home and it all kicked off from there,” said Geoff.
Nigel Wellings, Inclusive Sport Coordinator, at STITC said: “From the beginning I could see how effused and knowledgeable Geoff was about football.”
During lockdown Geoff helped in delivering training and support for young people online and also used the time to complete additional coaching courses.
“My target in the long term is to complete all the coaching courses, build up experience and hopefully one day manage at Shrewsbury Town Football Club,” added Geoff.
