Shrewsbury Colleges Group is proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our former students, who continue to excel at university at a level surpassing their peers from independent schools, sixth form colleges, and school sixth forms.

New data from the Higher Education Statistics Agency highlights that our students are not only thriving in higher education but are also more likely to achieve top-class degrees, particularly at the UK’s most prestigious universities.

Key findings include:

Former SCG students are more likely to achieve a first-class degree at all universities, and also specifically at Russell Group universities, than students from independent schools, sixth form colleges, and school sixth forms.

44% of our students secured a first-class degree at Russell Group universities, compared to 34% of students from independent schools.

Former SCG students are more likely to achieve a first or an upper second-class degree at all universities, and also specifically at Russell Group universities, than students from independent schools than students from independent schools, sixth form colleges, and school sixth forms.

87% of our students achieved a first- or upper-second-class degree across all universities, rising to 90% at Russell Group institutions.

Shrewsbury Colleges Group Principal, James Staniforth, said:

‘These results demonstrate the exceptional calibre of our students and the outstanding teaching and tutoring they receive during their time at the college, which gives them the skills they need to be successful in the future. We are incredibly proud to see our students excelling at university, particularly at some of the most competitive institutions in the country.’

He added: ' These findings reaffirm our commitment to providing an inclusive, high-quality education that empowers students to achieve their full potential, regardless of their background.  Our students from areas with the lowest higher education (HE) participation rates are more likely to achieve a first-class degree than their peers from independent schools, sixth-form colleges, and school sixth forms. This means that students who mightn’t normally be expected to go on to university or do well at university go on to perform brilliantly at university thanks to the wonderful teaching that takes place at the college.’

The results also show that our former students whose parents do not hold a degree are more likely to achieve a first-class degree than students from independent schools.

As a college dedicated to student success and inclusion, Shrewsbury Colleges Group continues to provide expert guidance, university preparation programmes, and strong academic foundations to help students thrive in higher education and beyond.
