A Shrewsbury Colleges Groups Sport student has participated in the prestigious Association of Colleges (AoC) Golf Open Championship at The Belfry.
Last week, Alex Poultney, 17, from Bridgnorth, studying BTEC Level 3 Sport, participated in the first round of the AOC Golf Championships, performed extremely well under testing weather conditions against 51 very competent golfers from across the colleges in the UK.
Overall, Alex came joint 22nd out of 52 students in the gross competition and joint 19th out of 52 students in the nett competition.
Mark Bissell, Sport and Exercise Science Teacher, said: “This is an excellent achievement considering some students who finished above Alex are participating regularly in BTEC and enrichment golf programmes within their timetable.
“This position puts him in a good place, going into the second round of the competition in March at Celtic Manor, with him being less than 7-10 shots away from the top 3.”
The Belfry is a renowned golf resort in Sutton Coldfield with golf courses. The headquarters of The Professional Golfers' Association are also located there and the Ryder Cup has been hosted at the resort on four occasions as well as numerous European Tour events.
