Meet Deanna Burgess, our payroll co-ordinator.

Surprisingly, back in 2011, Deanna failed her GCSE maths, in fact she would go so far as to say she hated the subject.

So, what changed?

Going back to the time Deanna left school, she had no idea what she wanted to do so opted for A levels, dropping out soon after as she realised they weren’t for her. A brief spell in retail, and then into an engineering company where she landed a job in the accounts office. And despite enjoying her time there, she had a hankering to travel, so jetted off around the world and started to think about what she really wanted to do.

Fast forward 7 years since GCSE's to September 2018, Deanna signed up at Shrewsbury Colleges Group for another stab at the GCSE maths course and this time she passed and what’s more she’d enjoyed it! Keen to achieve more, she signed up for an accounting level 2 course the following year, progressing through level 3 and then on to level 4, gaining full technician status in January 2023.

A month later Deanna accepted the role of Payroll Co-ordinator at the college and is loving it! “I never imagined at school that this would be my ideal job, but I love working with processes and realised that passing maths was the springboard for gaining a job I love.”

We have an upcoming AAT Event, come along for an informal chat about starting or boosting your career in Accountancy and Bookkeeping!
