Shrewsbury Colleges Group is delighted to announce the successful collaboration with the local community in the restoration of the historic church door at Buildwas Holy Trinity Parochial Church.
The college was approached by Nigel Bowen, secretary of Buildwas Holy Trinity Parochial Church Council and also the Co-ordinator of the Buildwas Church 300 Restoration Project, to see if the college and the staff could help with an engineering project.
The latch on the church main door had failed. The latch was made of iron, and there was an issue with how the handle fitted into the door had become badly worn.
Andrew Lee, Curriculum Director for the Engineering department stated: ‘This was abit of a challenge as the latch wasn’t well designed originally. The latch is about 1 foot long and is quite heavy, so there's a lot of weight on the axle. We were able to help however with one of our teacher completely rebuilding the latch.
Nigel Bowen, secretary of Buildwas Holy Trinity Parochial Church Council, expressed gratitude for the college's involvement, saying, "We are thankful for the college’s support and the teacher’s hard work to rebuild the latch on the centuries-old door, which had suffered from wear and tear over the years. It's very difficult to find people with the skills to repair iron, so we were very pleased that the staff from Shrewsbury Colleges Group were willing to help us out. This is a key part of the wider Church restoration work that we are working on."
This restoration project is a great example of how educational institutions and local communities can work together to achieve meaningful and lasting outcomes. We look forward to future collaborations that will continue to benefit both our students and the broader community.
