Level 2 NCFE CACHE Certificate in Awareness of Mental Health Problems

With one in four people being diagnosed with a mental health problem, I feel it is important to learn more about mental health. I am halfway through my course and already I have a greater understanding of mental health and mental ill-health. Distance learning works very well for me. During the lockdown, whilst my salon was closed It was important for my own mental well-being to have the opportunity to learn remotely and since returning to work, studying at home fits in with a busier schedule.

Level 2 Makeup and Nails
Previous school: Meole Brace School

I wasn’t sure I could do makeup and nails – I have always loved it, but decided to study business after school. However, I wasn’t enjoying myself and decided to take the leap of faith into beauty and I haven’t looked back since. After I’ve completed this course I want to progress onto Level 3. The course is fun and everybody is really nice – teachers and students.

Level 3 Diploma in Childcare and Education
Previous school: MShrewsbury Academy

You get loads of placement and work experience opportunities on this course – with two days a week for the whole year. I do mine at Shrewsbury Cathedral Nursery. It is a very rewarding course and gives you a great head-start with your future career, with so many job options available once you’ve completed College. The teachers are helpful and supportive, with College and personal issues. I hope to go to university to get my PGCE so that I can eventually be a primary school teacher.

Course Studied: Level 3 in Engineering
Course: 750

Level 2 Fabrication and Welding
Previous school: Charlton School

I’m a practical person, so I wanted to do something with my hands.  I didn’t have any experience before, but the teachers were really good at guiding me through.  I’m a bit of a perfectionist, so the fact that the staff let me work to my own pace really helped.  I have now secured an Apprenticeship with Caterpillar in Shrewsbury, and I can see myself being there for some time.  I’m sure it wouldn’t have happened unless I’d been on this course as at my interview they seemed really impressed with what I was doing.

Course Studied: Level 3 in Adventurous Activities
Course: 863

Level 3 Outdoor Activities
Previous school: Burton Borough School

The amount of activity days we get to go on throughout the year is amazing. It is a sporty and energetic course, but with so many amazing activities other than generic sports. It is great that we get to fundraise for a charity and even better that this year’s relates to someone on our course. Everyone works really hard on the course and the teachers are supportive – it’s great to be around like-minded people.

Level 3 Performing Arts
Previous school: The Telford Priory

I have really enjoyed the course, especially getting involved in the pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, where we were allowed to improve and add to the show. Playing Simple Simon was my first lead role and pantomime is such a fun genre to explore.

Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Service and Repair
Previous school: Abraham Darby School

I chose to come to SCG because they have the best motor vehicle facilities. All of my family are in the vehicle industry and my interest grew from there. It is an amazing course and I have learnt so much. It is hard work, but once you start putting the effort in, it gets easier.

Level 2 Bench Joinery
Previous school: Belvidere School

My Dad is a carpenter and I help him out, but I would eventually like to have my own business. There is good machinery at SCG and the teachers are skilled – it is a great place to get on with your projects. I have enjoyed all the curved work we have done and I created a window frame with the skills I learnt.

When I was at school I knew I wanted to be trained in a trade and completed work experience with labourers – they advised me to become an electrician. There is a great atmosphere at the College and I want to continue with a Level 3 Apprenticeship after this year.
